LMA StoneBreaker™ The LMA Stonebreaker™ is a portable contact intracorporeal lithotripter, intended to fragment stones in the urinary tract. The device weighs around 500g with a probe and requires no extraneous electrical or pneumatic connections. It is powered by a cartridge of high-pressure carbon dioxide gas which delivers a maximum pre-adjusted pressure of 31 bars at the tip of the probe. The device has been designed to be ergonomic and easy to use compared with other current intracorporeal pneumatic lithotripters. However its reduction in size and increased portability do not restrict it as it is the most effective and powerful pneumatic intracorporeal lithotripter on the market, allowing fragmentation and removal of stones in relatively short procedure time. There is very little movement of the probe itself, allowing for safe stone fragmentation. The LMA Stonebreaker™ carbon dioxide gas cartridge provides the necessary energy for one surgical procedure. Once the cartridge has been perforated by the built-in screw system, the gas passes through a pre-adjusted pressure regulator in the device and a mechanical shockwave required for fragmentation of urinary stone is generated when the trigger is depressed. Expended gas leaves the chamber through a specially designed exhaust port and exhaust line. A spring pushes the hammer back to its starting position; when the trigger snaps back, the intermediate chamber is filled again with gas and the device is now ready for further use. One full cartridge allows delivery of at least 80 shocks and to date procedures carried out using the device need around 10 shocks to break up stone successfully. Once the operation is completed, the cartridge is removed; in doing so, the remaining gas is automatically vented.
